We were delighted when Gary Joynes Slater, a senior lecturer in advertising at the University of Gloucestershire and Disney storybook illustrator, agreed to come back to school to advise pupils in St Cecilia on how best to draw a cartoon superhero character.
Gary teaches advertising, illustration, and design theory and practice, predominantly in to the BA (Hons) Advertising course at the University of Gloucestershire. He has worked as an illustrator for some twenty-eight years, acquiring an extremely diverse range of skills and knowledge associated with art, design, and illustration. The former two thirds of his career was spent supplying illustrations to some of the top advertising and design agencies in the country. He has worked with clients as diverse as Hasbro Toys, Sony, BBC, Royal Mint, Marks and Spencer, Kraft Jacobs Suchard, Activision, and Disney. This work has brought him into contact with brands such as Transformers, My Little Pony, Vanish, Philadelphia, Terry’s Chocolate Orange, Thomas the Tank Engine, Call of Duty, and so many more… Currently he is what is referred to as a ‘Disney storybook artist’. As such he works on Disney brands like Winnie the Pooh, Jake and the Neverland Pirates, Cinderella, and Special Agent OSO.
The class is studying the Superhero theme during Terms 1 and 2 and they have to create and draw a Superhero character and develop their own comic book.
“Mr Slater came into our Y6 class and we learnt how to illustrate. It was fun and amazing. Now I know how to illustrate. It was a great experience for us.” Shanay Y6
“I enjoyed Mr Slater coming to see us because he told us how to draw proper cartoon people. I leant that sketching helps A LOT with drawing. Also, because Superheroes is our theme, he showed us how to draw a superhero e.g. Batman, Superman and The Black Widow. ” Briony Y6
